Engagement Photos - A Photographer's Tips on What to Wear!

Recently engaged and planning your photoshoot? SO excited for you, girlfriend! We know that with spring in full bloom, this is a wonderful time of year for engagement photos to happen.

Tip #1: You can never be "too dressed up" for your engagement photos.

Is there a dreamy dress hanging in your closet that you never have the chance to wear? Planning a super-formal wedding, and hoping to set the tone in advance with your engagement photos? Go for it! Your engagement photos are an opportunity to have fun, and to dress up as you please. Bonus tip: Rent the Runway has proven to be tremendously helpful to brides who want to go formal, but maybe don't want to purchase an expensive engagement photo dress to wear one time.

Tip #2: You can also dress more casually, too!

There's no pressure to formalize your engagement photos. Of course, we will encourage you to dress nicely and to look clean and put together, but you don't have to break out a gown and tux. Ultimately, it's about dressing in what makes you feel your best! Again, Rent the Runway could be helpful as they offer some semi-formal attire, too. OR- if you're excited to add a few new permanent pieces to your wardrobe, do your thing, girl! We won't tell you not to shop if that is what you want to do ;-)

Tip #3: Long dresses and skirts > everything else

It's romance. It's feminine. It's got the twirl. Dresses and skirts are absolutely ideal for engagement shoots, as they tend to be the most flattering, bring the most movement to your photos, and add some dimension as well. We recommend wearing long, flowy dresses or skirts for your photos. Midi or cocktail-length dresses also photograph beautifully, but the longer ones usually provide more pleasing photos to our couples.

Tip #4: Go for more neutral colors with less noisy patterns.

Loud, colorful clothing can potentially impact your engagement photos in a couple of ways:

(1) They take some of the focus off of you + your honey

(2) The bright colors can reflect off of your skin and make you look discolored

Going with creams, taupes, grays, and tans is ideal. If you're passionate about color, go for pastels! These colors usually photograph more beautifully in natural environments, too.

Tip #5: Wear clothing that makes you feel confident!

It may go without saying, but we are going to say it. There is NO REASON to wear something - be it out of season, uncomfortable, hard to walk in, etc. - that doesn't make you feel your best during your engagement photos. If your clothing isn't making you feel 100% your best, you will see it in the photos, and you'll probably remember it forever. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to play and pose in front of the camera as a newly-engaged couple with your honey, and the last thing you should be worried about is how cold you are, how uncomfortable your shoes are, or anything else other than him. If you're between an outfit that you really want to like, and an outfit you know looks good and feels good, go with the latter!

We are SO excited for you, your honey, and your marriage-to-be, and we hope that this has helped make choosing your engagement photo outfit(s) a little less complicated.
